Final outcome: Online Course 

Learn what innovative practices sport clubs can use to improve their membership and participation in sport.


The main aim of the CHAMP project is to give the sports movement innovative tools and education for modernisation. The findings will be distributed through an online course which offers fresh insights as well as current trends and solutions for physical activity promotion.

The objectives of the project are:

  • To carry out research on the benefits of modernisation and innovation within the sport movement.

  • To do research on and identify innovative practices inside and outside of the sport movement to increase physical activity and sport participation.

  • To produce and disseminate educational content on these innovative practices to modernise the sport movement and to make the educational material available for the public free of charge in a Massive Open Online Course.

Aim of the Project:

To develop a framework for humane, inclusive and empowering coaching and sport clubs that nurture mental wellbeing.

This shall be achieved by:

  1. Collecting and compiling relevant research review and useful best practice examples in the field of sport and mental health.

  2. Developing key recommendations for educating coaches that advance the mental wellbeing of their sports participants. These recommendations for coaches’ education, will be based on the research review and mapping study on best practices.

  3. Creating a coaching framework that presents the academic case (based on research review) for sports and mental health in an accessible manner and utilises best practice examples to guide the learner through an educational path.

  4. Producing an accessible online learning course, facilitating the skills development of coaches in a flexible way. This online educational content will be publicly available and free.



IO1 Full Systematic Literature Review

This systematic literature review investigates the role of coaches in the promotion of mental well-being-enhancing physical activity. It depicts factors that positively and negatively influence coaching behaviour and impact on the mental well-being of sport participants. Furthermore, the review provides a conceptual map for analysing these factors in the specific context of recreational grassroots sport, and recommendations for the training of coaches; what to consider for coaching; and how to promote mental well-being.

IO1 - SLR Key Findings

This document extracts some of the key findings of the systematic literature review above and presents them in an accessible manner to challenge sport coaches and clubs to reflect on their current practices. This document is available in English, German, Dutch, Spanish, Greek, Bulgarian and Finnish.

IO2 - Mapping of Good Practices

This report describes the good practices collected by partner countries in the autumn of 2020 with which sports clubs promote mental well-being. The clubs’ mental well-being activities focused on healthy life habits, mental health skills, inclusion, and/or creating supportive sports club. The report describes the issues raised by the clubs and the results, strengths and weaknesses of good practices ultimately providing recommendations to other sports clubs going forward.

Project Description


Mental health is a state of well-being in which every individual realises one’s own potential and is able to make a contribution to one’s community. It encompasses emotional resilience, allowing us to enjoy life and overcome disappointments and sadness. Belief in our own, and others’ dignity and worth, underlies mental health.



Coaching is an important area for mental well-being. In sports, the coaching professionals and volunteers not only promote future competitive success and the adoption of an active lifestyle, but also create the basis for lifelong health and well-being. Participating in sports supports mental health development and even the small acts and words that people encounter in sports can steer the future course of their lives.


Based on the collection and analysis of evidence-based research and best practice, a set of recommendations will be developed to push for change top-down, targeting stakeholders responsible for coach education at the highest level.


In order to transform sport at the grassroots level directly, we will develop a handbook for inclusive coaching. For maximum impact, an online learning tool will be developed to provide innovative and easy-access training for coaches.


In the course of the SPIRIT project, 13 national and international events will be organised in Germany, Finland, Greece, Spain, Belgium and Bulgaria, targeting groups such as coaches, sports clubs, national sports confederations and National Olympic Committees, sports federations, universities, mental health organisations, refugee organisations, and decision-makers at different levels.

The implementation of the concept of positively humane coaching can decrease drop-out levels in sport, thus increasing physical activity and improving public health. Moreover, vibrant and welcoming sports clubs result in more cohesive communities and societies, enhancing social inclusion.
