Top tips to #BeActive during isolation

These are challenging times for all of us as the coronavirus pandemic continues to strongly affect our daily life, including our physical activity routines. At ENGSO, we encourage you to stay #BeActive in case your health level permits you to. We have collected a couple of ideas on how to maintain your activity level during quarantine.

1. The WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO Europe) published a set of suggestions on how to stay active while practicing social distancing. The organisation states that physical activity and relaxation techniques can be useful tools to help us remain calm and protect our health. It also reminds us that the “WHO recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a combination of both”.

In order to achieve these recommendations, WHO Europe put together a set of suggestions on how to maintain our well-being, followed by some simple home workout exercises.

2. Walking, jogging and running are the simplest ways to stay active. As WHO Europe suggests, walking is highly recommended, and can be done by most of us. One can walk even while taking a call, so no time is wasted! If your activity level allows, you can go for jogs and runs as well, but always keep at least one meter from others!

3. If you'd like to exercise at home, you might want to follow some workout videos. Fitness Blender is one of the oldest workout YouTube channels, with over 600 free fitness videos to choose from. Most of these workouts need minimal equipment or no equipment at all. Also, some of the videos show alterations to the exercises to accommodate the varying fitness levels of participants.

4. Practicing yoga has many benefits. For instance, regular yoga practice can lead to increased flexibility and muscle strength, can support cardio and circulatory health, and can help maintain a balanced metabolism. There are a wide range of different yoga types that we can practice at home and there are thousands of yoga videos available online for free. Yoga with Adriene is one of the most popular yoga YouTube channels with over 6.4 million subscribers.

5. Jeff Nippard is a natural pro bodybuilder and internationally-qualified powerlifter. He dedicated a video on his YouTube channel to the #COVID19 pandemic, in which he gives tips to adjust our training routines to our new circumstances. His video is for those who are already heavily involved in training and would like to maintain their physical activity level at home. Additionally, Jeff suggests truthful resources to learn about the coronavirus and he gives some diet tips to follow during lockdown.
