The new Eurobarometer on sport and physical activity is out

A Special Eurobarometer was published earlier this month on sport and physical activity in the European Union. The 133-page document shows the results of a survey carried out in December 2017 among 28 031 respondents from different social and population groups. The respondents were interviewed face-to-face at home and in their native language, on behalf of the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission. It is the fourth comparable survey of this kind after the ones conducted in 2002, 2009 and 2013.

Physical activity levels of EU citizens didn’t increase substantially since the last survey – published in 2014 -, and the main reason is that measures taken to increase physical activity levels need a couple of years to make changes in people’s behavior.

Therefore, Commissioner Navracsics, when announcing the publication of the survey at the annual EU Sport Forum in Sofia, stated:

"The new figures show how vitally important it is to continue our efforts to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. I strongly encourage all actors, from public authorities to sports organisations, to intensify their efforts and work together."

This survey provides data to support the development of policy framework for promoting sport and physical activity EU-wide and it will allow policymakers, researchers and other interested parties to analyse current physical activity trends and compare them to the ones of the previous years.

You can read more about the publication of this survey here. The full document in English is accessible here, while the previous surveys can be found in the European Commission’s Public Opinion database.
