The European Olympic Committees held its General Assembly in Zagreb

On 24th and 25th November, the European Olympic Committees (EOC) held its General Assembly (GA) in Zagreb, Croatia, hosted by the Croatian Olympic Committee. Among others, the event was attended by the Secretary of State for Sport of Croatia, Janica Kostelić, the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, the President of the Association of National Olympic Committees, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah and delegates of all 50 European National Olympic Committees. ENGSO was represented there by our President, Carlos Cardoso, our Secretary General, Stefan Bergh and our Policy Director, Heidi Pekkola. Our Executive Committee member, Lotte Büchert was there as well, representing the National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark.

On the first day of the GA, Acting EOC President, Mr. Kocijančič awarded the 2017 EOC Order of the Merit to Zlatko Mateša, praising him to be the “founding father” of the European Games. The multi-sport event will come to its second edition in 2019 in Minsk.

At the end of the first day, at a gala dinner, Italian cyclist Letizia Paternoster was awarded the 7th Piotr Nurowski “Best Young European Athlete” Prize.

On the second day of the GA, the European Olympic Laurels were awarded to the leaders of six NOCs for their commitment to sport. Victor Sanchez from Spain, Tzeno Tzenov from Bulgaria, Roberto Fabbricini from Italy Igor Lysov from Ukraine, Mieczyslaw Nowicki from Poland and Rezso Gallov from Hungary received the awards.

One of the most important agenda points of the GA was the election of the new EOC Executive Committee for the 2017-2021 period. Acting President, Janez Kocijancic, Secretary General, Raffaele Pagnozzi and Treasurer Kikis Lazarides stood unopposed, and were therefore elected, and Denmark National Olympic Committee President, Niels Nygaard became Vice-President, collecting more votes (27) than his opponent, the President of the Netherlands NOC, André Bolhuis (22). The 12 Executive Committee members of 2017-2021 are Mr. Hasan Arat (Turkey), Mr. Alejandro Blanco (Spain), Mr. Jean-Michel Brun (France), Mr. Spyros Capralos (Greece), Ms. Daina Gudzineviciute (Lithuania), Ms. Liney Rut Halldorsdottir (Iceland), Mr. Andrej Krasnicki (Poland), Mr. Jozef Liba (Slovakia), Mr. Zlatko Matesa (Croatia), Mr. Peter Mennel (Austria), Mr. Bill Sweeney (Great Britain), Mr. Djordje Visacki (Serbia).

Several members of the new Executive Committee represent an ENGSO member organisation, and we are very pleased with this. We wish the entire Executive Committee a very successful mandate and we look forward to the co-operation!
