The ENGSO General Assembly 2020 went virtual
Updated: Nov 25
On 12 November, the ENGSO family gathered online for our 28th General Assembly. The event was supposed to be held in June 2020 in Torshavn, Faroe Islands, but due to the current COVID-19 situation, the event has been postponed and finally moved online.
After the welcoming words of our President Stefan Bergh, representatives of our partner organisations addressed the Assembly. Kole Gjeloshaj, Deputy Secretary General of the International School Sports Federation and the Chair of the Consultative Committee of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport of the Council of Europe; Arjan van 't Veer, Secretary General of the European Lotteries; Wolfgang Baumann, TAFISA’s Secretary General and Haris Pavletic, Vice President of EUSA all greeted the participants.
After accepting the minutes of the 27th General Assembly, held in 2019 in Frankfurt, we heard a presentation on ENGSO’s Annual Report 2019. The participants were introduced to ENGSO’s work in Erasmus+ co-funded projects, and informed about ENGSO’s representation in a number of events in 2019. Our Annual Report 2019 is available on our website in the Publications section.
After adopting the Annual Report 2019, Financial Report and the report from our auditor, it was time for the Assembly to hear about a new member application. After some restructuring in Slovak sport, a new umbrella organisation was established in late 2018, namely, the Slovak Olympic and Sport Committee (SOSC). In the past, the Confederation of Slovak Sport Associations was our Slovak member, but the entity has been closed due to the aforementioned restructuring process. Now, SOSC applied for ENGSO membership, and their application was accepted unanimously. We would like to warmly welcome them in the ENGSO family!
The Assembly also held two mid-term elections, electing a new Secretary General and one Executive Committee member. We congratulate Sara Massini, Head of the International Department at OPES Italia and previously ENGSO ExCom member, on her new role as ENGSO Secretary General, and wish her great success! The Hungarian Competitive Sports Federation nominated their Secretary General Edina Andrejko for the vacant Executive Committee membership position. We warmly welcome her in our Executive Committee!
The General Assembly participants also received updates on the ENGSO Action Plan 2020–2021 and from the three ENGSO committees: ENGSO Youth, Equality Within Sport (EWS) Committee and the EU Advisory Committee.
In conjunction with our General Assembly, we held an Extraordinary General Assembly for the purpose of revising the ENGSO Statutes. After a summarising presentation on the topic by Kaisa Larjomaa, ENGSO Policy Director and outgoing Acting Secretary General, the Assembly approved the proposed changes and adopted the new Statutes.
Towards the end of the Assembly, there were two event announcements to make us excited for 2021. If the world health situation allows, the ENGSO General Assembly 2021 will be held on 11–13 June 2021 in Torshavn, Faroe Islands. Additionally, it was announced that the fourth edition of the European Sport Platform will be held in 2021 in Vilnius, Lithuania. More details about these upcoming events will be communicated in early 2021.
We were very pleased that we had over 50 participants at this year’s peculiar General Assembly and we are grateful for everyone’s participation. It was particularly special that all our Honorary Presidents were with us, namely, Birgitta Kervinen, Carlos Cardoso and Bengt Sevelius. It was an amazing feeling to see the familiar faces of all our friends in European sport, even if only through our screen. We do hope that in 2021 we will be able to greet everyone on Faroe Islands and continue exchanging ideas on grassroots sport in Europe.
