Sport has the power to bring people together and to unite Europe
On the 19th June the European Evening of Sport was organised by the EU Office of European Olympic Committees and hosted by the State of Baden Württemberg in Brussels. The Acting President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), Janez Kocijančič and keynote speaker Dr. Thomas Bach, IOC President, underlined the power of sport for the society, especially in learning values and sharing emotions. They also stressed out, that sport can build bridges and tear down walls, to bring Europe and European people closer together. After their speeches, during the discussion round with - among others - the Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Tibor Navracsics, there were reflections on the recent years’ developments of promoting sports within the European Union, especially highlighting the European Week of Sport. The Week will take place again this year in September and its opening event will be organised in Estonia.
ENGSO President Carlos Cardoso and ENGSO Youth Chair, Michael Leyendecker, used this event to widen the network of ENGSO and ENGSO Youth and to discuss the role of grassroots sports in Europe with the participants.
