Preparations started for the European Week of Sport 2019

On 23-24 May the Sport Unit of the European Commission organised a seminar to start the preparations for this year’s European Week of Sport. The event gathered around 90 representatives of national coordinating bodies and partner organisations in Sintra, Portugal. Our communication expert, Mariann Bardocz-Bencsik took part in the meeting on behalf of ENGSO.

The seminar was a great opportunity to learn about the changes to this year’s #BeActive campaign compared to the previous editions, and it was also a good chance for the Key Players to meet and network.

On the first day, the representatives of the European Commission and this year’s communication team from BCW Brussels introduced some changes to the campaign, including the use of number five in the communication materials, highlighting that 2019 is the fifth year of the campaign. Later in the morning some indoor and outdoor #BeActive exercises took place with the purpose to get to know each other and each other’s best practices around the #BeActive campaign.

In the late afternoon a team-building activity was held on the wonderful Praia das Maçãs (Apple Beach), which was also a great source of inspiration for some simple, but fun beach activities.

Dinner time was another opportunity to network in a beautiful local restaurant.

The second day started with an introductory presentation to the European Week of Sport campaign for the Eastern Partnership and Western Balkan countries that will officially join the campaign this year. It was followed by the presentation of two #BeActive success stories: the European School Sport Day and the Social Biking Project. Later in the morning the participants worked in two workshops – one on social media and one on advocacy – with the communication team to develop the 2019 #BeActive campaign.

ENGSO has been a partner of the European Week of Sport since its beginning, and it is amazing to witness how the number of participating countries and partner organisations has grown over the years. It’s also great to see how many energetic ENGSO "family members" are involved in the campaign, including the ones who participated in the seminar: ENGSO Executive Committee members, Ilva Ciemite and Natasa Jankovic, who were there representing their national organisation; ENGSO Youth Vice-Chair Nevena Vukasinovic, who works with the communication team; and ENGSO Youth young delegate Laura-Maria Tiidla, who represented a partner organisation in Sintra.

In the past years, ENGSO has organised an event in Brussels to contribute to the European Week of Sport. In 2017 our event focused on grassroots sport as a tool for social change, co-organised together with the European Lotteries (EL), our partner. In 2018 our two-day event mixed physical activities and talks about gender and sport, organised by ENGSO, EL and Panathlon International. In 2019, another event will be organised by ENGSO and EL on 25 September. Stay tuned and you will soon hear more about our #BeActive 2019 event!
