PlayGreen football events are shaping across Europe

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

PlayGreen is an Erasmus+ Sport collaborative partnership project where ENGSO is a partner. Led by Ecoserveis, the project consortium aims to create volunteering opportunities for young people focused on sport and environment.

Currently, PlayGreen football events are taking shape across Europe. Project partner football associations, the Estonian Football Association, the Flanders Football Federation and the Malta Football Association are closely working with their volunteers to plan and develop their green tournaments. A series of mentoring sessions are also taking place throughout the year both face to face and online to help our volunteers with their duties.

In January, an online seminar on the environmental impacts of sport events was organised by Ecoserveis followed by a mentoring session on the ‘Green Tool’. The tool will be used by the Green Team volunteers to evaluate the environmental impacts of their events striving to make them greener. The recordings of these sessions are available here and here.

These series of mentoring sessions along with seminars run by ENGSO on the recruitment, training and engagement of environmental sport volunteers, will form part of the first intellectual output of PlayGreen. This is a mentoring toolkit for sport organisations on how to develop and run green sport events with their volunteers. PlayGreen also aims to create a network of like-minded sports organisations that are interested in applying the PlayGreen methodology in others sports as well, beyond football.
