Inspirational Forum to conclude the New Leaders Programme
In November 2017, our Honorary President, Birgitta Kervinen won the IOC Women and Sport World Trophy for her advocacy work for gender equality in sport. The award was USD 50,000 and Mrs Kervinen decided to use it for advancing women’s leadership in sport in Europe.
In November 2018, 30 ambitious young leaders were selected to take part in the New Leaders Programme, Mrs Kervinen’s legacy project. The initiative has been a joint effort coordinated by the National Olympic Committee of Finland together with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the European Olympic Committees, the NOC of Azerbaijan and of Lithuania, and the Olympic Council of Ireland.
After a full year of workshops – in January 2019 in Vilnius, in April 2019 in Dublin and in July 2019 in Baku – and continuous work both by the organisers and the participants, the New Leaders Programme has come to an end.
On 18-20 November 2019, the final event of the Programme, the New Leaders Forum was held in Helsinki. It was attended by numerous high-level sports leaders, including IOC President Thomas Bach, EOC President Janez Kocijančič and EOC Gender Equality Commission Chair Sarah Keane. A substantial ENGSO delegation was present as well, including President Stefan Bergh, Secretary General Kaisa Larjomaa, Michael Leyendecker, Sara Massini and Agnė Vanagienė - all Executive Committee members -, ENGSO EWS Chair Niina Toroi, ENGSO Youth Chair Ugnė Chmeliauskaitė and those five Programme participants who have been involved in ENGSO Youth at some point in their career. The five ENGSO Youth-related "game-changers" are: Iva Glibo (CRO) and Ivana Pranjić (AUT), members of the current ENGSO Youth Committee, Laura-Maria Tiidla (EST), young delegate and Anett Fodor (HUN) & Floriane Poncet (FRA), ENGSO Youth Alumni members.
Over the Forum, we have picked 10 tweets and a LinkedIn update that best showcase the essence of the New Leaders Programme.
And here is how our Secretary General, Kaisa Larjomaa summed up her expecience at the Forum:
