Council Work Plan for Sport 2017-2020 under negotiations

The Council of the European Union is currently negotiating on the new EU Work Plan for Sport 2017-2020, which is expected to be adopted by the Sport Ministers in May. The Work Plan will define priorities and the agenda for the EU sport policy for next three years.

ENGSO has actively followed the negotiations by advocating for grassroots sport. ENGSO’s position paper on the Work Plan proposes to continue the three priorities (societal role, economic dimension and integrity) of the current Work Plan. However, ENGSO is of the opinion that follow-up for the work of the High Level Group on Grassroots Sport is needed. For instance, social inclusion and safeguarding the conditions of sport clubs at grassroots level should be taken onboard in the new Work Plan. In addition, further work is needed in the area of volunteering, especially regarding the implementation of the European Skills Agenda and the contribution of volunteering in sport to the employability of young people.

The negotiations will continue during April and the beginning of May in the Council Working Party on Sport in order to finalise the document for adoption on 23 May 2017 at the Council meeting of Sport Ministers.
