Carlos Cardoso candidates for the Consultative Committee Bureau of EPAS

ENGSO is proud to present its President Carlos Cardoso as candidate running for the Consultative Committee (CC) Bureau of EPAS, the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport of the Council of Europe.

“ENGSO is a bridge-building organisation since its establishment, even our symbol is a bridge. And since the foundation of ENGSO, we keep building bridges geographically in Europe and in between the different areas of sport. We all in ENGSO absorbed this idea as our way of life in sport.

I consider myself as a bridge-builder within sport too. Not only by serving as the president of ENGSO, but through my sports life experience as well. I have been involved in high-level sport through IAAF (I have been an athlete – sprinter) in which I hold a relevant position for more than 30 years now, and I’m an advocate for grassroots sport through ENGSO and for instance through the organisation of the TAFISA2020 World Sport for All Games in Lisbon. It’s sport at its broadest spectrum from grassroots to high level."

I believe that the EPAS Consultative Committee could benefit from my experience, that is why I candidate for a place in its Bureau.”

ENGSO and EPAS have been long-time partners. Moreover, ENGSO is one of the 26 member organisations of the CC of EPAS.

Carlos has served and still serves in a multitude of sports organisations – e.g. in the 1980s and ‘90s he was the President of the Portuguese Athletics Federation, he served as member of the Board of the Olympic Committee of Portugal, and he was the Director of the main High Level Sports Centre in Portugal. As a physicist he was Prof. Dr. at the University of Lisbon where he also held the Presidency of the Executive Board of the Faculty of Sciences.

Nowadays he is still active: apart from being ENGSO President, he is the FISU Technical Delegate for Cross Country and the Chairman of one of the four committees of the International Association of Athletics Federations. He is also the President of the Portuguese Sports Confederation.

Carlos is a long-standing advocate for a strong, independent and fair sports movement; we believe that his election would be of great benefit for the CC and the sports movement at large.

The CC is a partnership body which gives its opinion on the programme of activities and provides advice for the decisions of the Governing Board. The CC will elect a new Bureau at its meeting on Monday, the 14th of May in Strasbourg, France.

The six members of CC Bureau are elected for a period of 2 years. They meet 1-3 times per year, prepare the work of the CC and set thematic priorities.
